Praying the Prodigals Home

I’m an angry woman! Really! And I want you to join me!

You see, I’m beginning a series to not only speak to the growing epidemic of unbelief in the lives of this generation, but to call mommas to join each other on the front lines of the battle for their children’s souls.

Lately, I’ve heard from so many women who are desperately praying for their prodigal children and wondering what went wrong. I’m talking about women who have loved Jesus with their lives and raised their children to know the Lord.

Women whose hearts are hurting like crazy because their children are behaving as though they never even heard the gospel – yet they grew up in homes where Jesus was lifted high, where ministry was a way of life and where their parents weren’t Sunday only Christians.

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed or not, but there seems to be a war going on to steal the hearts of our children and I’m getting pretty sick and tired of watching wounded mommas crying over their kids when they should be able to rejoice in them.

I’m tired of letting the enemy gain ground on this generation’s beliefs and I’m sick of sitting back while the world creates a culture of doubt in the hearts of our children.

Make no mistake about it… we are in a war.  It’s a war for the soul of the next generation.

Guns and knives will not win this war. Strategy, strength and skill will not defeat the enemy. It is a war that must be fought on our knees.

We read the story of the Prodigal Son and we’re presented with the precious promise that our Heavenly Father is waiting with His arms wide open for every prodigal who will come to the end of himself/herself and fling themselves into His loving arms.

But have you ever wondered what the father in the story did from the time his son left home until the time he returned? I realize Jesus was giving us a parable but this parable pointed us to people who walked in the same shoes many of us are walking in now.

My imagination is moved by a father who weeps over his son… a dad who dug holes in the dirt floor where he planted his knees night after night as he prayed for his prodigal to come home.

Do you think that a father who ran to welcome his wayward son home would have ever became so accustomed to his son’s lostness that he just quit praying?

A father who would keep his eye on the driveway would also keep his knees planted in prayer and his heart at the feet of the cross.

We can’t give up and we can’t give in. Moms with prodigals must never get so used to their children being lost that they grow weary in prayer. Moms with wandering and wayward children can never lose hope.

So, today, I’m going to see if moms who are willing to pray their prodigals home will join me on the front lines of the battlefield for their children’s souls. I’m asking moms of prodigals to join hands and hearts and begin fasting and praying for their children.

During this series, I’ll calling to moms to fast and pray for each other’s children as well as our own. I will post on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and add the names of the children given in the prior comment section.

It’s as simple as this:

1. If you want your children to be prayed for by others, leave their names in the comment section (first names only) and their names will be added to the list on each post for other prayer warrior mamas to see.

2. If you want to be a mom who is willing to pray over the list of prodigals, leave your name and in parentheses, let us know you’re the praying parent by saying, “Praying Parent”

I don’t really know if anyone reading this post will venture into this commitment to pray for one another’s children, but I want you to know that if you leave your child’s name, I will join you in prayer.

Sweet friend, you’re not the only one whose children are wandering in the wilderness of foolish choices. You’re not alone in as you cry out for them to run back into the Heavenly Father’s waiting arms.

Join me and other moms who will pray for one another’s children and take the front lines of the battle we’ve been losing for far too long!

Take a moment to read through the story of the Prodigal Son and remind yourself that your prodigals do come home… but it’s time for moms to stand in the gap like never before and say, “These children belong to God and I will not give up until I see them coming up the driveway and in the arms of the Father where they belong!

“And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that fallsto me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood. And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living. But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.

“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!  will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.”’

“And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

“But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.” Luke 12:15-24

My prayer is that every mom of a prodigal will soon hear those beautiful, long awaited words, “He(She) was lost and now is found!”

Oswald Chambers once said, “Prayer is the greater work.” Moms, today it’s time to do our greater work and pray the prodigals home. Will you join me?

  17. Our eldest was a prodigal for 3 years. I know the pain and anguish of a momma's heart. He was grabbed by the Hound of Heaven and his life was turned around 180 degrees. Matt will be graduating from Biola University on May 26 and will be serving as a Youth Pastor beginning in August. God cares, God hears. God answers exceedingly abundantly beyond all we can think or imagine! Please pray for our other son, Mark who is a Believer and very respectful of our wishes yet self-reliant in this season. Thank you, Lisa (praying parent)

I know God can bring healing and freedom to Caleb. I am thankful to join in with other believers to pray for our children.
