Open My Eyes

“Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.” Psalm 119:18

Have you ever felt like you really wish the Lord would make you smarter than you are? I do.

There’s so much that escapes me. So much I’m not capable of understanding. So much I need to hear God whisper to my heart.

Years ago, I realized that if I was ever going to have the wisdom I need to fulfill God’s calling on my life, that I need to pray for the Lord to make me smarter than I am, wiser than I am and more knowledgeable of His Word than I am.

So, I began praying, “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things from Your law” before I opened His Word.

It’s one of the things I share with those who ask me about how to study God’s Word.

Without God opening our eyes to understand His Word, we won’t be able to discern what it says on our own.

The Bible says, spiritual things are spiritually discerned and that it is the Holy Spirit who teaches us.

It is from God that we receive wisdom. It is from God that we understand His Word and how to apply it to our daily lives. It is from His Word that discover God’s love and God’s will for our lives. It is in God’s Word that we get a glimpse of His grace and His mercy. It is in God’s Word that understand that God is our Creator and Sustainer.

But God’s Word isn’t like any other book. We need the Lord to open our eyes so that we may see the nuggets tucked so sweetly in the pages of Scripture so that we can begin not only understanding what it says, but living out it’s precepts.

Today, I want to encourage you to not only spend time in God’s Word, but ask God to open your eyes so that He might show you wonderful things from His instructions.

What are some things you do before you read God’s Word?
