Road Tripping

When we were in the process of car shopping for our son, we were having a difficult time finding a suitable vehicle. At the time he was six foot five inches tall in his stocking feet. (He is now six foot eight). Even though he’s thin, he couldn’t even squeeze in the seat of some of the smaller cars. So, we considered bequeathing my sweet hubby’s Jeep to sweet son and maybe us getting something else.

The pocketbook advised something cheap, so I tried out a little car that was rather fun to drive. I’ll admit feeling like a teenager, which led to those youthful thoughts that I really needed a pin stripe and sporty wheels, maybe even a stereo with big speakers in back so I could blast out my praise music as I rocked down the road.

The adult in me wanted safe, affordable, easy on the insurance rates, and one that would last a LONG time without need for repairs. Ugh. I hate spending money. I really wanted God to place a flashing neon sign over the vehicle he wanted us to buy saying “buy this one.”

Of course, I would love that kind of sign on everything I do. Wouldn’t it be cool to wake with a day-timer already filled out by God? I would zoom around checking off things, pleasing God, and I’d be happy and fulfilled.

True, except for that nasty side of me that would be a touch rebellious. I’d probably check the day-timer, decide perhaps other things could fit into my schedule, and wind up driving off-road looking for flowers, rivers, and hills. Then I’d race back feeling horribly guilty.

Bummer. Even without my daily God schedule, I can give myself a big guilt trip.

So, what did I do? Whined. Whimpered. Stared at the computer screen. Stared outside. Stared at my dog. Stared at my Bible….

Eureka! Answers!

“He has showed you, what is good. What does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Whether you turn to the right or to the left, you will hear a voice behind you, saying, this is the way; walk in it. I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.” ~ Micah 6:8, Isaiah 30:21, Proverbs 4:11.

Thank You Father, for Your Word. Thank You for Your promises and guidance. Please forgive me when I get stuck in ruts or drive off with my own agenda. Help me to listen for Your voice, follow Your teachings, remember that You are always in control, and enjoy this wild road trip called life.
