I love the word Behold! It’s definitely an attention-getter for me. That’s probably a good thing since getting our attention is what it’s supposed to do. It means to stop and take notice, to gaze upon, to survey, inspect, and contemplate.
God graces the pages of Holy Writ with a multitude of Behold moments that take our breath away and leave us in awe. As Christmas draws near, we have an opportunity to behold Jesus once again in a fresh new way.
It’s easy to get so familiar with someone that we tend to take them for granted. It happens most with those we love best.
I wish it didn’t but our humanness assures us that we’re all just that… human.
God isn’t surprised by how human we are either. In fact, He’s much more aware of our inadequacies than we are. Perhaps that’s one of the many reasons He strategically sprinkles the word Behold throughout Scripture. To get our attention. To wake us up. To call us to stop, take notice, gaze upon, survey, inspect, and contemplate.
As we approach Christmas, don’t let the sites, the sounds, and the busyness of the season, distract you from what Christmas is really all about.
Take time to Behold Him in a fresh new way. Intentionally focus on who He is and get to know Him more.
Just remember, more than God’s call on our lives to serve Him is His call on our lives to know Him.

Luke 2:9-11
- “9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
Isaiah 40:9
- O Zion, You who bring good tidings, Get up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, You who bring good tidings, Lift up your voice with strength, Lift it up, be not afraid; Say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!”
Luke 2:34-35

Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your King is coming to you;

Oh sweet friend… Behold Him. Really stop long enough to take notice, gaze upon, survey, inspect, and contemplate. Linger long enough to get to know Him more. After all, isn’t that what this Christian life is all about?
