This is so very personal for me. I was a single mom who could barely keep food on the table and a roof over my head. I’ve waited in the long lines for food stamps, filled out the complicated pages for assistance, and applied for government housing.
The $13 in food stamps they said I qualified for wasn’t worth the gas it would take me to get there or the 3 hours I would have to stand in line to get it. Although my income was far below the poverty rate, I didn’t meet the requirements for financial assistance. I did, however, qualify for government housing.
Unfortunately, I quickly learned that the system is designed in such a way that it makes it much easier for those in need to get in than it does for them to get out.
